Anti-Drug Propaganda

This is an example of old anti-drug propaganda, specifically against marijuana. Who do you think it is marketed towards? How is it portraying the use of marijuana, and what techniques are used to accomplish this? What is the significance of the fact that the drug is being given from a boy to a girl?

  1. I am responding to analyze the interface of the poster. Looking at this poster it is easy to tell that it is older anti-drug ad. This ad refers to marijuana as the smoke of hell and the "Devil's Harvest" trying to target the emotion of doing the right thing and staying on the right path in regards to a spiritual sense. I find it interesting that there are really only two predominate colors in the ad, green and red. The red is associated with hell and being wrong, while the "good girl" is dresses in green because green is usually used to represent "good." Unlike modern anti-drug ads, this one is not using horrific images or violence to try and drive a point across, but rather just using right versus wrong. It is really targeting the spiritual believers, who will want to do the right thing to not go to hell.

  2. In what ways does the absence of horrific images and violence add to or take away from the message? Why do you think they target the spiritual believers, and could the ad also have an impact on non-spiritual believers?
