Above the Influence Commercial

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZUq3jUjwdoQ

This commercial is called "Lost". It's purpose is to show that doing drugs can make you lose yourself. It shows this by having the invisible person running around until he finds himself. Do you think the commercial is effective in making the viewer feel this way? Who do you think the intended audience is and why? Do you think this is an accurate representation for all drug users?

  1. Using prompt 7, I think the commercial doesn't do a very good job of actually making an impact and affecting viewers' opinions. Reading through some of the comments on YouTube, it seems what people care most about the music that is playing during the commercial, rather than the message the commercial tries to portray. Other viewers seemed confused or frusterated by the fact that the commercial just used the general term 'drugs' instead of using a specific drug. Maybe if the creator had targeted a specific drug, the impact would have been greater, because the viewers would have something specific to stay away from. But by just using the general term 'drugs,' it could mean caffine, tobacco, alcohol, meth, etc, which may confuse people and make it easier to not think about the true message of the commercial.

    1. I agree with the fact that there is a lack of viewer interest in the posts on youtube, however I thought the commercial did a good job of portraying the "I'm lost" factor. While watching, I found that I was confused and lost until the end when they explained that the commercial was about drugs. I liked the fact that the commercial did not point out a certain drug because I feel that all drugs and substances cause the user to get "lost." Usually people use drugs when they themselves are "lost" so this seemed like a commercial that one could relate to. Even if you are lost now drugs will just make you more confused.

    2. I have to agree with Ericka and the "I'm lost" factor. I found it interesting how the commercial was made in regards to not saying it was about drugs until the end.

  2. I am responding to analyze the interface of this commercial. While I agree that this commercial could have made more of an impact if it had targeted one specific drug, I think it still makes an impact. This commercial claims that when a person uses drugs, they lose track of their true identity. This is a serious claim in a country like the United States, where a person's individuality is valued above all else.

  3. In addition to Kelsey, using prompt 7, this commercial is not very effective. It does not make the viewer feel sympathetic in any manner. The claim is very serious, however there is not enough persuasion to make the viewer feel as though he/she can truly be in the commercial/situation. It was made well, however the content is not thorough enough to make emotions emerge from the person watching the commercial.

    1. I would have to agree with Meghan. The message that they want to get across is very serious but the execution of the message in the commercial is poor. The music doesn't have much of an impact nor does much of the background colors or locations. You wouldn't even know what kind of message the makers were getting across if it weren't for them talking at the end. I, as a viewer, don't feel sympathetic towards the guy at all. Even when he's "lost" in the woods, he doesn't look that scared and he doesn't seem to show much emotion when he's reunited with his invisible self except for maybe a little bit of annoyance.

  4. This commercial does not do a good job getting the message across that drugs are hazardous. It surely does not make me want to not do drugs. At least the commercial with the kid sitting idly on the sofa was a realistic consequence of harmful drugs. The commercial also fails to mention any specific drugs. It appears to be a loose interpretation of play-on-words of the word "lost," as the teen has literally lost himself.

  5. In this ad, one observation we made is the fact that the invisible person is blown away by the bus when it is pulling away. This could signify that you can be frail and lost altogether if you continue to use drugs. At the end of the video when the guy sees himself with no face or hands, this could signify the guilt in realizing that he made a mistake, and that he really wants to be the person he was before he used drugs.

  6. The ad could be making an insuation about doing drugs. It appears that when you use drugs you lose yourself and/or your mind. This could be represented by the invisible guy who was franticly searching and the actual person is alone, motionless, and emotionless in the woods (i.e. lack of a mind), until the invisible man reaches the body. The way they interact is like he is coming to a realization about what has happened.
