Alcohol Ad?

I found that this was an interesting picture becuase of the replacement of drugs with alcohol. Both are clearly bad for you but it's as if the author is saying that alcohol is better than drugs. Does this portrayal favor alcohol or drugs, and how does this change the view of the audience on the author? Does the emphasis on alcohol, with the orange letters and picture, make this an ad for alcohol and to what extent? How does the blandness of the background affect the audience and why would the author chose this instead of a more active picture?

  1. Prompt 1: I believe that the author of this "anti-drug" ad was being sarcastic. The visual aspects of the ad come across a dark with the black, grey and white theme. The only exception to this is that "ALCOHOL" is in big orange font. When reading the ad this made it come across as sarcastic with the bigger enunciation. Also if the author was being serious that drinking alcohol was in a better light than drugs I feel that they would have used a nicer image of alcohol consumption than the party paraphernalia. If I could I would have liked to blow the picture up to identify what is written in the bottom corners to get other hint t whether the poster is a funny college like joke or an actual ad to get you to really think about how different alcohol is from drug use. The overall theme that came across to me is that they are not really that different depending on how you use them.

  2. Prompt 1: I agree with Ericka. This advertisement is definitely being sarcastic about alcohol being better for you than drugs. The picture shows a dirty beer keg with a dark background. I believe that it would be hard to interpret this in a good light. Also, the word “alcohol” carries a much more negative connotation than the word, for example, “beer.” This does not seem to be an alcohol ad, but rather an anti-alcohol ad. It seems that the dirty appearance of the background serves to disgust the audience, eventually negatively affecting the way the audience thinks about alcohol (the keg). It seems to give the message that “alcohol is not a good substitute” for drugs.

  3. Prompt 1: I disagree with the previous posts and think that the creator of this poster actually is hinting at the idea that alcohol shouldn't be considered under the drug category. It is playing off of the other anti-drug advertisements which have more serious alternatives to drugs by showing a keg and tap that seem rather clean and shiny which can stick out of the dark background. This is more of a gag poster that questions the description of alcohol as a drug and less of an advertisement that discourages drinking

  4. I agree with Zach because alcohol is a drug. So by saying that it is their anti-drug they are saying that it shouldn't be considered one. I know a lot of people who do not consider alcohol to be a drug. However I can also see how the background and orange letters can make it seem like it is supposed to be a bad reference to drinking. I think the background and everything being plain might be to get straight to the point.

  5. Prompt 1: I agree with the previous posts that all say how the author is indicating that alcohol should be considered a drug. I think the sarcasm suggests that though many people do not consider it to be a drug, it really is. Drugs alter one's perception of the world, and this is precisely what alcohol also does. It is making fun of an idea more than trying to persuade anyone into thinking in a certain manner.
