Pro Methamphetamine

Most everything so far in the class this quarter has been anti-this and anti-that. I noticed this and thought that there must be something out on the internet that is supportive things that are bad. It was honestly harder than I expected to find something like this. Why might the author use a play on words to support meth use? What meaning do the batteries and water bottle cause and how might it make the audience feel? Is there a sense of sarcasm in this advertisement? How does the sarcasm effect the way the audience interprets the advertisement?

  1. I am responding to prompt one and wow this add is much different than the rest of the things we have seen posted so far in class. I definitely sense the sarcasm you mentioned. If you had not previously heard of crystal meth, you would have no idea that is was something bad based on this advertisement though. They make it look so appealing in this add. I think the batteries on the front kind of through off the positive vibe a little bit though, because batteries are never associated with food. I think what they might be trying to say is if you wouldn't buy and eat something in a package like this, why would you do meth because it is the same thing? I believe that is what they are trying to say by the sarcasm of the advertisement.

    1. Kelsy, I agree that the batteries on the front of the box give the negative impression of crystal meth. However, the fact that this ad is sarcastic is the fact that it uses a craft food box and the term shake 'n bake implies how simple and easy crystal meth is to make and anyone can make it.

    2. I definitely agree with the message that Craft seems to imply that meth is simple and easy. I wonder if the makers were intending to make it sound like its easy to do and get addicted to meth or maybe that its easy to make meth. It seems to me that they are implying that its easy to do meth since there is two packets of what I assume is meth and to shaker bags. This advertisement seems extremely sarcastic in the sense that it uses Kraft shake n' bake to talk about meth.

  2. I am also responding to prompt one. This definitely puts a positive look on crystal meth. You can see how using a Craft box makes it seem that crystal meth is a easy thing to get and use. The phrase "shake 'n bake" was used in a popular young adult movie and could be a way to relate crystal meth and young adults.

  3. Prompt 1. As everyone else has stated, this ad speaks mainly about the relative ease at which meth can be made. By using a box styled after Craft Mac n Cheese, it makes meth production seem like child's play. While it doesn't exactly come out and praise crystal meth, it doesn't criticize it like the ads we've seen in the past. The only hint that meth may be a harmful substance are the AA batteries.

  4. I also agree with everyone saying that its purpose is to show how easy it is to make. I think that the water bottle and batteries go along with that by saying you just need normal household products to make it, making it that much easier. I also like seeing advertisements that are positive about drugs. I think they are interesting and it is funny to see how they try to portray their message.

  5. I also agree with the posts that describe this drug as easy to make. It's making it appear as though anybody could easily make the drug. The picture is poking fun at the concept and making a very serious matter seem almost like a joke. Craft mac n' cheese is one of the simplest foods to prepare. I learned to make it as a child. It is almost like saying the drug is easy enough for a child to produce.
